Thursday did not end on the greatest note and I was feeling just a tiny bit discouraged. Notice, I said a tiny bit. The Lord has a way of sending you exactly what you need when you need it. Friday, I received a message from a college professor (hi, L!!!) asking if I be a part of a collaborative project with her students. She is teaching a Deconstucted Art class where her students will journal on pages I create. I am so honored to be a part of this and even more honored that these will be my first commissioned art pieces. This is truly a blessing.
Sunday, a high school art teacher (Hi there, J!!!) emailed me wanting to know how she could reach out to her African-American female students. They don’t see how art or a career in visual arts can benefit them.
I tell you both how much I admire what you are doing as teachers. Those kids are so blessed to have passionate women exposing them to different kids of art. I wish our educational system truly valued how important it is for our kids to have art be a part of their lives. Life IS the ART! It is as simple as that. When you take it way, you take away their self expression.
One of my super big dreams is to open an art facility for kids to come in and explore everything. The dream is so vivid. I can see everything in it except for the facility. Well, I just put it out to the Universe, so Universe, get to working! Let’s make this happen. Dreaming big is a good thing. A very good thing.

I share your dream … for kids and adults. I meet far too many people who have convinced themselves that they are not creative, not artistic. I was one of those people. My wonderful artist self hid in the corners of my soul for most of my life… only in recent couple of years have I been exploring that.
I dream of a community cultural center with art studios, dance studios, a community library … no dewey decimal system there, each person would adopt their own shelf. Then, say someone comes in looking for books about birds, we can say, go look on Alan’s shelf … he loves birds. I would like it to have a viewing room for film discussions, a comfy place for book discussions, a safe haven for discovering and re-discovering our artistic free spirit.
it is i who am honored to have you be part of the project. and as far as your dream of an art facility - we should chat about that too - i used to run a center in new york like that.
package is in the mail tomorrow (somone forgot to tell me today is a holiday) and then i will call you. Linda
sounds like a beautiful dream. art is everywhere and enhances our children’s learning experiences. it is so important and so fun! i am putting some good energy out there for you!
Sounds like great project. I daydream about having a space with small classes of a dozen students - kids and adults to make art and simply take a moment to play…
Kudos to you. I am a history professor and I teach African American history. I find that students are better able to connect with history when I use art and poetry.
Great blog…and much love,
